For Pediatricians & Primary Care
Most ADHD is diagnosed and managed in primary care. Here's when a full evaluation adds something.
Many children with straightforward ADHD are diagnosed and treated well in a pediatric office. A comprehensive evaluation is most useful when the picture isn't straightforward.
When to Refer
- Parent and teacher rating scales disagree, or are borderline
- You suspect anxiety, low mood or a learning disability alongside, or instead of, ADHD
- Possible autism or social communication concerns
- A bright child struggling in ways that don't fit (possible 2E)
- Response to medication is weaker than expected
- Family needs documentation for a 504 plan, IEP or college accommodations
- A teen or young adult presenting for the first time with attention problems
What You Receive
A written report covering attention, executive functioning, memory, processing speed, cognitive ability, academic skills, and social and emotional functioning, with a clear statement about ADHD and any other diagnoses that fit. Recommendations are divided into home, school and clinical sections, so the part meant for you is easy to find. Families can share the report with your office.
Research Done in a Pediatric Practice
Dr. Tutty's ADHD trial was carried out in a pediatric setting with Harlan Gephart, MD, focusing on behavioral and social skills in children newly diagnosed with ADHD. More about the study.
